Podcaster's Prayer 0

The Podcaster’s Prayer

As I continue through this Podcaster’s life, help me to speak clearly into the mic Help me to gain one more fan and to ignore those trolls that I continue to ban. Remind me when I look in an empty room, to see a crowd that cheers and swoons And if I make a horrible mistake, it becomes the best highlight blooper reel take. Never let me forget that someone listens for more than those first 30 seconds Keep faith that person will eventually write and tell you this show is “alright” Capture that podcast twinkle in my eye and show...

MXL’s Mobile Media to Bring Podcasters Awesome Microphones

I got a chance to talk with Perry Goldstein of MXL Microphones and their newest direction — mobile media. They wanted to put out a line of microphones for podcasters and videographers that will connect to any mobile device and give you high-quality sound. Analog vs. Digital connector Perry noted they couldn’t focus on digital connectors, due to the fact each device is different. They wanted to have a microphone that will connect and work every time. Therefore, they chose to use the 3.5 mm (1/8″) 3-pole headphone jack to connect the microphones up. Along with audio capture apps, this...

FilmOn.TV is Selling Your Podcast

Last night I was informed a website – Filmon.tv – is selling your podcast for .99 cents or more. The FilmOn.tv website states you can watch local channels in the US and Canada. However, digging deeper, we found an area that has hundreds of podcasts for sale in HD. The website’s front page has several TV channels — from sports, kids stuff and movies to music in different genres. The social area allows you to do one-on-one video chats or broadcasts. This service is also available on iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows devices through apps. Who / What is FilmOn? Filmon.tv...

Sponsorship: What’s Your Podcast Worth?

If I was to put together the top ten questions I get asked, this would be one of them. You’ve been podcasting for a while and the cost of doing it needs to be covered. Maybe you’re not in it to make a million (which you shouldn’t be) but you definitely want to treat the family to a steak dinner every month. Where do you start? Do you give everyone a flat rate and hope someone bites? Once you get a sponsor, how do you keep them? Important Keys to Getting a Podcast Sponsor   Before You Continue – Read...

Corporation for Public Podcasting Pt 1. – Getting the Podcast Started

So your boss walks up to you and says he wants the company to start a podcast. He knows you are a podcaster so he wants you to do it. Great! Mixing work with pleasure can be exciting, but it can also burn you out from the thing you love. So where do you start? What is the best direction to go? Multi-Part Series on Podcasting in Corporate Settings I have decided to put together a few posts on the issue. This series – called “Corporation for Public Podcasting” – will be a guideline to help you podcast for your...

Are YOU a podcast evangelist? 0

Are You a Podcast Evangelist?

I just got off the phone with a potential client talking about podcasting and ROI (Return on Investment). I brought up the idea of a spokesperson – or evangelist for their product. I talked about in the 70’s Bill Bixby promoted the Vic-20 computer and Bill Cosby promoted the TI-99 lines. Even today celebrities like Lea Michelle promote L’Oreal, Paul Giamatti voices Liberty Mutual commercials and – even though he was fired from it – Gilbert Gottfried’s “Aflac” can still be pointed back to him. So you as a podcaster – are you an evangelist? I wrote this post up...

Record Podcasts with Multiple USB Microphones 6

Use Multiple USB Microphones to Record [How to]

When I consult podcasters that want to use 2 or mor microphones for podcasting, I recommend a mixer like the Alesis MultiMix 8. Sometimes the podcaster doesn’t want to deal with anything more than what a USB mic has to offer. So they ask if you can connect more than one USB mic to your computer to record. The answer is you can  with a little bit of work at the beginning How USB Microphones Work Normally by plugging in a USB microphone you are turning that sound device into the primary. The secondary or tertiary sound source is not...

Improv Before Podcast 0

Day 16: Podcast Improv Games

When I was in High School drama club working on the semester’s play, we would warm up by doing improvisation exercises. They helped us loosen up our mouths, minds and even bodies. We would also play incognito games – little games you continued to play as you went. Just like in Carol Burnett Show – every time she pulled her ear she was saying hi to her mom. Playing games before and during a podcast can keep you on guard. It prepares you for your next move and it keeps you moving as you podcast. You can have a lot of fun before a...

Day 12: 9 Tips to Keep your Podcast Legal

Day 12 is a guest post by Gordon Firemark. Questions? Let him know – @gfiremark. Also check out his book – The Podcast, Blog & New Media Producer’s Legal Survival Guide As an entertainment and media lawyer, I’m regularly approached by bloggers, podcasters, and new media producers with questions about “how to do it legally”. Fortunately, the rules are pretty clear, and they’ve been around since “new” media meant radio and then television. Here are a few guidelines to help keep you on the straight and narrow. 1. Start with the premise that media is media. Communications media may change,...

Sell something on your podcast 0

Day 10: Make and Sell a Book or Product for Your Podcast

Art is making something out of nothing and selling it. – Frank Zappa Before we go any further, I am letting you know this post is for the serious podcaster. If you are a weekend warrior that does not want to make profit on your shows, then you might want to come back tomorrow. With that said… Why Will Selling Something Bring You Audience? According to State of the News Media (1), only one quarter listens to podcasts – 9% are active in the podcasting area (they will interact and listen to multiple shows). That means 3/4ths of Americans alone do not even...
