Yolanda asks: I have a podcast show called ” Radio & TV Entertainment Am/Fm” Podcast Show. I have over 21 episodes, with amazing public figures and celebrity special guest I have interviewed on my podcast show. But, I am needing your advice on how to get my audience to invest $$ in my podcast on a month to month basis.
Let’s welcome our new members:
Unedited Transcription (except for “Geekazine”)
This show you how to use this transcription program called otter Ott er, and we’re going to do that as we go from here. So, how you doing I hope you had a great week here in in where whatever you doing your podcasts are flourishing happy and everything else we of course we’re recording live over at how to cut podcast and of course I will be posting it up over at how to how to record podcasts.com where I need to make a major site redesign to get more into 2019 that’s that’s going from here. We’re also live live 24 seven over on youtube.com, forward slash Geekazine at the live symbol right there and then of course over on Twitch over it Twitch. tv forward slash key because you can go ahead and and subscribe down there and there’s a cool system where you can get your rocks, which is a point system for you and of course over on YouTube. Go ahead, subscribe, like and hit the bell. Of course, these videos will not be showing up there, but other cool videos we went to CES. We went to Nam plans for South by Southwest, and I’ll talk about that in a second. And then, of course, we’re going to talk about this cool feature right this cool little thing right here it is called otter and it’s not showing it very well, but I’ll just says we go a transcription for your podcasts real time transcription for your podcasts, can’t go wrong there can go wrong there. So, hope you’re having a great day. let’s get straight into z news and of course the biggest week we talked about the teasing of Spotify actually buying gimlet media. They also turned around and they bought anchor f interesting stuff there. So bear. they’re basically betting big on podcasting that those two acquisitions our show. Basically that Spotify is very interested in podcasts, they really want to. They really want to get into that $314 million acquisition is probably of course that was 2017 2018 probably got it up to 370. Maybe I that’s just spit balling off the top of my head. Don’t Don’t quote me on that Dustin Drew’s joined How you doing, Dustin I hope you’re having a great time, feel free to ask questions and comment on the show notes down there. So, all right. Um, so, Spotify, of course betting big on podcasting and anchor FM what is anchor FM. It is a podcast app where you can use your phone to to do your podcast. I’ve done a couple of them early on when they were when they just started actually was. I think this time last year I know it was at a show where I was at the Anaheim Convention Center. So it was either either in January, or in June, when I was covering when I was covering VidCon, so I don’t know, we’ll see what happens. And we’ll have joined How you doing, and how you everything yeah hopefully is going very good for you.
So with this Spotify is just ready to explode on the podcast scene and with gimlet media that’s not going to concern you as much anchor FM. Some of you have in fact, so I was talking with somebody last week on the live show and they were telling me and how they were using anchor FM. So now that they’re part of this new area. I don’t know how that’s going to switch over to Spotify, but it’s going to switch over to Spotify somehow.
So it’s interesting will get marked out to Koster that just joined How you doing, Mark, feel free to comment, ask questions and and go from there. So with this acquisition D gee.
I’m curious as to see if you feel that Spotify is going to be taking over podcasting, especially from things like Apple iTunes because we’ve always held Apple iTunes like the golden crown like Simba in the Lion King like you know we’re whoever whatever. And I’m curious as to find out if you feel that Spotify is now just taking it to the next level Spotify, I believe will be at SXSW it’ll be interesting to see what type of presence. They bring into the into the event and go from there. So, really cool. Of course, you probably read on this but check that we got the TechCrunch article right there another very interesting article which really kind of frustrates me a little bit and somebody’s definitely doing some linking link love there for the Spotify thing and this is over on stuff.co.nz.
It’s a Spotify is takeover of gimlet media and the end of free podcasts. Now I don’t know about that. I think there are many podcasts out there that will remain absolutely free, but they’re saying it was a good run but all things must come to an end. Good podcasts that are free to pod will soon be a fond memory
and you know I don’t know this is going through this article I was not they do make some good points like podcasts, not all podcasts make money, not all podcasts do revenue, but you know sometimes podcasts are meant straight up for promotion, you know i i might have a company that I want to push my podcast to I might have a program or our product that I want want to sell you and the best way is sometimes the best way to do it is just to have a podcast, you know and and then do do talk to people that have used my product talk to people that have read my book talk to people that have done this or that are the other thing and the sole reason is just to promote this event or thing and I’ve done this many times with different companies where we put together a podcast that’s never going to be a long form podcast, it’s going to be the length of the product that they they decide when it’s done, it’s done you know that it might be a you know a one year thing might be multi year thing so podcasting to have a podcast for Excuse me. My nose is itching, but to have a podcast that is free is the quintessential idea of podcasting and whether it be audio or video and you have so much audio and video out there. It’s crazy. Like for instance I podcast, you know, you might know that I have a I have a sponsor for my audio files at cash fly calm and in the show notes I talk about cash fly I don’t normally talk about on the air because there’s always you know these companies, you know, like YouTube and Facebook that say hey you don’t want to put up your the any type of sponsorship or anything like that but cash fly and companies like cash fly. They go, No, we don’t want you to highlight that we know we want people to know that you’re with cash fly so if somebody asks who you host with I say cash fly as 14 day free trial. Go get it and then go from there. So, this, this shows never going to be sponsored by those those companies so I can keep things in the area so you can consume them and Spotify as a way to consume some podcasts. Yes, and they’re going to be taking that to the next level. But is it going to be your point of start for podcasting answer is no, I don’t think so just yet, unless they do that they could do something that could make it the point of start for podcasts, but right now we hold we hold iTunes way too high and until iTunes starts charging for podcasting.
Yeah. No, it’s not going in. We’re going to still have free podcasts. So a lot of podcasters they don’t make money because they don’t promote properly.
I hate to say it but it’s it’s the fact if you are promoting things if you’re influencing if he, you know, then people are going to want to talk with you people are going to listen to you and people are going to catch your show. It’s as simple as that. So this article is clickbait Simple as that. It’s not the end of free podcasts, it’ll never be the end of free podcasts, just like radio you have free radio and you have paid radio and they’re both still exist and you could literally create a radio station from your home and it’s actually a lot easier now that there’s internet but you could create your internet radio station easily you can create your Internet TV station, like I did you could create and it doesn’t have to be paid. It could it can be free. There’s always a free option. So anyway, take that stuff horrible job on that clickbait type stuff and then of course I reported I talked about some authority new Bob born Joel join and Kenny Briggs joint. How you guys doing go ahead and ask your questions in the comments area and we will go from that space. Speaking of which, let’s let’s talk about our new members Preston brown Steph Clark Todd Curtis Nathan car and Rinaldo Ben’s Gallus I think that’s how you pronounce that. I apologize morning to you, Kenny. How you doing, is a great day isn’t it. Yes, it is. Let’s move on. Let’s go over to slate. com slates pod be has a podcast platform and now they are offering a service for other podcasters for page shows just like subscribers to sleep plus.
So, with this, they have. It’s called supporting cast allows podcasters and podcast networks to offer members only versions of their shows,
so they’re basically trying to pull you into their podcast realm and maybe make a star out of, you
know, just kind of putting your your show into there. So I don’t know how it all works. But, you know, it kind of feels like the MCs of of YouTube.
So if you are if you don’t know what an MC and I was a multi channel network. Basically what it means is they bring all the podcasters into one container and then they promote it. they say hey we got this podcast. This podcast is just like gimlet media just like podcast one just like all these except they’re giving you the opportunity to have your podcast in there and then with that you know your podcast is powerful. It rises to the top or it just stays at the bottom so interesting stuff Todd just joined How you doing today hope you’re having a great day Kenny is said welcome and we have about 24 inches of snow in the last 48 hours. Yeah, we had we did my hands are raw in and tired from all the shows snow shoveling or show snuggling I don’t know how you pronounce it anyway yeah i got i went to last week I went to Austin for tech field day came back and we had a layer of ice and I’ve been shopping ice all day and for all weekend and then it’s snowed and then it’s note yesterday. Now the sun’s out sunset. So it’s melting in a way, but we had a good deal. I think I like nine or 10 inches of snow.
Thank God first nobler so anyway back to the article here slate talking about supporting cast and it is.
It’s interesting, we’ll see how it works.
You can check it out over at supporting cast.fm we got the link in the show notes and let’s see we got some more comments here Kenny’s asking. Have you tried the new backpack studio. No, I have not.
I haven’t been nobody’s reached out to me to test it out just yet, but that doesn’t mean anything could could be down the line. We’ll see what happens. I’ve got a lot of products in total, including the Blue Yeti nano the Ember which I was talking from last week and a couple other podcasts things I can’t talk about yet because I’m under embargo, let’s move on from there.
Let’s go over to digital Daily News gimlet media being bought out not only the podcast news of the week. We also have something from and this article is from our friends over at media post and it’s basically a pod clip podcast platform Himalaya they launched with 100 million dollar funding round. So as you can see there are people trying to get into the space, big time and they you know they really you know they want they want their mark because they want their shows and as as you might see them might get some they might have some stars that will help out with the with the podcast with the with their own shows and this they beef up, they’ll have a lot more going from there. Let’s see the company CEO is you Wang previously co founder and CTO of auto radio Ott Oh, radio, which is interesting because we’re going to talk about otter not auto anyway so he has a deal with the Dallas Mavericks and NBA franchise to do some of the stadium audio and as well as some other show. So as you can see they have a couple you know have a couple big stars. So they’re hoping to use that to bring other shows in so they can go from there.
Kenny Briggs came back, he says I have it and it works great. What do you like most about the backpack studio because you know I’m interested. I’m interested to find out a little bit more about that. And I know you guys are very interested to find out a little more about that as well.
All right, let’s start with Article of the of the show, and that is over on entrepreneur. com for Influencer Marketing Secrets entrepreneurs need to know. Now if you are doing a podcast, guess what, hey, you’re kind of an entrepreneur, you know, even though even though you might oh this is just my gaming podcast, you know, we just roll dice and play Dungeons and Dragons or or we basket. We were we fix cars or whatever. But yeah, no, yeah, it can be a something entrepreneurial and you know you can write a book from it and you can sell copies of the book, you can have affiliate codes, you know, that becomes you become an entrepreneur.
When you become an influencer you become an entrepreneur.
When you become a podcaster you become an entrepreneur of lager and entrepreneur. You’re breaking off and you’re doing your own thing. This is an entrepreneurial advancement.
Simple as that. So, so I have this link, it has some pretty cool stuff here I’m just going to read the first one here co create with your influencers and that’s what this show is about. We’re co creating with you guys like for instance Kenny is telling me about backpack studio which which is a great product but I haven’t had a chance to do it. And he’s had a chance to play with it and I’m I’m giving you guys the opportunity to come on the show and do your only episode of How to podcast. Now you can’t just go live on the page. But you contact me and then we work out something so you can be on the show.
Maybe we’ll do a one on one interview. Maybe you’ll do the show solo maybe, I don’t know, we’ll figure it out.
Speaking of which, over how to record podcasts, I am looking for somebody to do some writing will get them to try to figure out how much I can afford to give you to write a weekly or bi weekly article has to be I’m looking for something at least 500 words 500 words. So if you’re interested in doing that, please let me know. Contact me over a Geekazine think magazine put in a geek tweet me geek is in Geekazine at gmail. com so all right so that was over on Enter entrepreneur. com check that out. We’ll have all the links in the show notes over on the Facebook page and on the how to record podcast. com page as well.
All right, let’s move on from here. We had an email this week.
Let me pull it up here.
Our friend Yolanda says I have a podcast show called radio and TV entertainment AM, FM podcast show I have over 21 episodes with amazing public figures and celebrity special guests. I’ve interviewed on my podcast, but I am a needing of your advice on how to get my audience to invest money in my podcast on a month to month basis.
Very good question, and there’s many different ways to do it.
And it’s basically just pushing yourself just pushing yourself just like for instance get busy. I have emerged page over Kizzy com forward slash March, I have a Patreon page [email protected] forward slash keep busy and of course a one time pay tip [email protected] forward slash Jeff powers paypal.me forward slash Jeff powers there. I just promoted myself and I have gotten people to tip me I have gotten people to go on to my Patreon page, I have this still ready to buy you you want you want this March. This is cool stuff. This is all Geekazine Brandon rich. I’m going to work on some other stuff that’s kind of not really that’s kind of cool to wear but not branded as Geekazine as such, so that that’s it’s going down the line. So those are some great ways. So basically set up your your methods. First of all, that would be first and foremost, and you know, don’t say we’re here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here do two or three two or three Patreon and PayPal or the two for me. I do have other areas.
If you go over to Geekazine com forward slash March that that gets you in those other areas because if you’re on YouTube. We have the YouTube store because that’s something that YouTube offers. So when you look at my videos and you look down there’s there’s probably going to be some Murcia there that you can press on and you can buy and those are mostly like the the sweatshirt and stuff like that.
I’m hoping to get some socks in there. So, um, but anyway, it is it’s it’s pretty cool and you have if you have multiple areas because then you can do if you do a podcast, you say I have here, here and here and then you go out on a book tour and you know you cater to the audience that you’re working with. For example, on my YouTube audience, I’ll say, hey, go to this these areas because these are aligned with YouTube whereas you know on Facebook. There’s no alignment here, so I’ll do the Patreon page and I’ll do Tiffany.
Simple as that. Now the other thing that I do want to point out, I went over to your iTunes. This is on iTunes preview. I went over to your page and there were a lot of things that I saw that definitely you want to do too and fix. First of all, your artwork. It looks interesting. But I cannot read it.
I cannot read anything here
it says radio and next thing is it says radio and TV entertainment AM, FM podcast show. Gosh, what does that mean
so it’s if it’s a basic says to listen to an audio podcast mouse over the title and click play. Oh, I’m sorry. That’s the brain fart there the description. There you go. This podcast debuts entertainment news and upcoming talent interviews giveaways and contests and more and then you have all these links on here that the. As you can see, don’t do anything take those out.
Take the podcast debuts say you know don’t you’re promoting yourself but you’re promoting yourself, you should promote yourself with a story. We love to listen to radio and TV and entertainment. We love to debate about that we we in we get into the crevasse and we just completely dig out what we’re what we’re talking about. But I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Now you have a special guest. Now, and this is the next thing here.
And that’s your titles your description as you can see right here. And of course, if you’re if you’re listening on audio you’re not seeing this, but in the description. It gives you less than 64 characters. So you’ve just completely ruined it by saying special guest celeb I don’t know celebrity who and they have the name and you have the description the same see a special guest celeb you Who is the special guest special guest should be first and foremost boom right there talking to Jeffrey powers Jeffrey powers on block
you see where I’m going from here and then in the description. You might get a little bit more into it, but you do not have the name and the description exactly the same.
The name should not say Episode 34 nobody cares that it’s Episode 34
you can put Episode 34 into the show notes so if somebody does care about it, then they go there instead of seeing on the title and the title put create something for your title.
So these three things are to begin with how to fix your show and I think that’s very important for you to fix your show properly so people can start seeing it. and then and then start to promote it.
I mean, if you’re not, if you’re not promoting your shows on Twitter if you’re not promoting your shows on Facebook. If you’re not promoting, you know, then your audience is going to go flat and this is what I’m talking about some of these podcasters they just they just put out a show and say okay it’s out there if you want to watch it. Hey, that’s fine. If not, that’s fine.
How come I’m not on new North noteworthy anyway. Check that out. So y’all land. I hope that helps you a lot. I’m not trying to dig on your show, but those are the things that I see just by looking at your page and if you haven’t gone into iTunes and looked at your page, then you should you really should so sorry.
There we go.
All right, let’s move on from there product of the week.
Oh, let’s let’s look at some of the comments first because we got a few here we got tomorrow, a plane joined How you doing Tum Tum Milla Milla I think that’s right pronounce it Kenny goes yeah he has the new backpack studio has more bells and whistles, then the boss Jacques studio. I need to install it. Yes, that is true and go from there. So he I guess he did a video on it so he’s got the video link in there for the backpack studio so all right let’s move on from there product of the week. Of course, you might see this in a lot more of my videos I you know I usually do the headset mic, but I’ve in the studio. I’ve decided to go more for something that I can move around with. And this podium, Mike, I got for my live stream efforts.
So when people are up on stage. They have the podium Mike instead of a level ear or recorded microphone in which they can talk into and and i was i was also trying using this for when I do coffee talks that they’re on the table, rather than making somebody up because that just adds a whole whole new level of complexity to your to your recordings your live stream. So anyway, so I’ve had this since September. The first one broke and but pile came back and they said hey you know okay we’ll replace it. So they replaced it I still have the broken one over here.
I’m not sure why I should probably just get rid of it. It might be a good prop for something, I don’t know.
But anyway, so I have that that’s that’s gonna be that’s gonna be the product of the week and that is over on Amazon will get the link in the show notes. It’s pretty decent if you have it set up right it is an XLR microphone so you’ll need a mixer for it. And if you have the right mixer. You want to definitely have something with at least three EQ settings on it to try and adjust for the sound. I have a parametric EQ and what that means is I can I can adjust many different frequencies and you know in line. So I have this set up. I think I have this setup pretty well let me know if it’s if there’s any issues with it. But so far, you know I haven’t had any problems using it for stuff like this. So, but I’ll have the link in the show notes if you want to check it out. It’s not a $32 podium microphone, but if you want something other than you know like the boom arm and things like that. Something low key low presence, then check this out. There’s other podium microphones as well. And there are some that are more expensive. There are some that are USB based. There are some that are less expensive.
they’ve got a lot of different options here so you can check that out on Amazon as well.
All right, let’s talk about the big product I’m talking about and that’s transcription because everybody wants to know about transcription that you know I remember with the with the Google Plus podcasters they asked all the time you know how do I transcribe a podcast. How do I do this now in YouTube you can actually just record something and then it’ll do a rough transcription, but then you have to download that s RV file. I think that’s SRT file or whatever it is and then you have to take out all the time stamps and stuff like that and it’s nice and useful, but sometimes you need a little bit more incomes this new well what I learned from last week I was at Tech field day and and Glenn can’t remember his last name. It was a long last name. Anyway, he he suggested this to me because what I was doing was I was creating these infographics, where I took a picture of the presenter and I was going to put in a little inspirational thing and then say where it was you know what was and it was tough because he was, he would say something, move on and I’m trying to remember exactly what he said so. But then he said, when you try otter for the transcriptions it’s like oh okay so I brought it up and all of a sudden started transcribing and I was able to get something that I could cultivate into a quote and put in this infographic and I love it so much. I’m actually using it right now. In fact, let me show you this. It’s awesome.
You can’t see it. Let me, let me adjust on the here. Of course, if you’re listening on the audio, you won’t be able to see it, but let’s uh let’s bring up this I thought I had this setup so it would work right
Here we go.
All right. As you can see,
taking what I say
and transcribing it
just like that. Now if I continue to talk, it’ll create one big paragraph rather than just bits and pieces and as you can see there’s there’s timestamps on there. But what I can do is I can then go to the web page and let me share the web page here.
Where are we and I’ll show you the web page right here and as you can see I’ve got all the notes that I had from the previous recordings and what it does is it saves an mp3 audio of the conversation. So you have that. And then of course you have, as you can see this note is live and I can rename that note to to how to podcast episode blah blah blah I can import audio and video and have it do some transcription there and I have to do is hit that start recording and have an audio device that can clearly get the voice. Now when I was using it in some cases, we went into rooms where they were dead rooms and of course I’m way over there and it’s harder to hear, especially for this and he’s picking up more room noise than it is picking up the voice so it’s trying its best.
So you want to have this a good clear voice on here for it to actually transcribe and transcribed correct because I had a lot of mishaps in in that transcription. But yeah, as you can see, it can it continues to transcribe with out any issue and I’m looking as I speak and it’s seems is you can see it.
It does a pretty good job putting that all together.
So a nice alternative and a way to transcribe and you go back and you look at all the shows I’ll have the transcription in our over at how to record podcast. com unedited so we’ll see how that works.
But anyway, if you’re looking for a transcription some way to transcribe and the best part is right now 600 minutes for free, a month that’s 10 hours of recording for free.
Now if you want to pay the price on it’s actually pretty cool. It’s like 999, a month or 7995, a year for 6000 minutes a month.
If I remember correctly was something like if you went all day for 12 days that’s 6000
so chances of you running into the wall on that 6000 is pretty low and you have transcription. You didn’t that keeps the transcriptions keeps the audio so you can go back, you can fix problems and I’m assuming there’s a way to to do some sort of repair and where you know if if it’s saying blab lie you can change it to blab blab
and it did it again.
So that’s not too bad as close and hopefully there’s a way to train and there’s only one. One thing that I’d love to see have happened with this and that is basically vocal recognition. So if I’m doing a presenter with people asking questions and you have the printer presenters voice. It shows that in one color and then any questions from an unknown voice. It shows in second color or something like that that that would be my one enhancement that I’d love to see otter do but it you know you can put this on your phone, you can put this on a computer you can put it on I have the transcription going as you go. So hopefully that hopefully you get that you get it in so it’s going to help you with your transcription.
What’s the name of the transcript apt again otter Ott he are now what’s interesting is I look at the logo.
Oh, you can’t see the logo. From there, let’s let’s go here. Now the logos not there, but let’s see.
I’ll have to do this, but there is this is the logo right there otter and as you can see it’s all line, line short line bigger line and I get why they have it like that, but it is it doesn’t really say otter
and kind of looks like an otter so that’s kind of cool graphical thing there but yeah it’s it doesn’t really say otter so that might confuse you a little bit saved my my home, my wound sorry say join. I know inside. I hope you’re having a great day. Feel free to comment down here as we continue to talk about podcasting.
Now let’s go over to the page. Let’s look at any Do you only had one conversation a couple conversations.
One thing I didn’t talk about in the news that I should have talked about is a newsletter for podcasters sub stack is creating let’s just bring it up here really quick boom sub stack. Here we go, is creating a paid newsletter for podcasters so you basically sign into sub stack and you put your newsletter there and then I guess people will pay for your newsletter
and they said we wanted to build through the core strengths of sub stack, you’re not paying for stuff or a product you’re paying for a relationship with a writer, maybe now podcaster you really trust. Trust and it’s Hamish Mackenzie the company’s co founder so newsletters I they’re great and I haven’t really played with some stacks newsletter letters. So we’ll see what happens. how that works. And definitely probably put it to the show.
So what do you use something for a newsletter. Let me know what you use.
And let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about it in the show notes. Let’s talk about it at the Facebook page and that you know that Facebook page over facebook.com forward slash groups, forward slash how to podcast
How to podcast, how to be part of the group.
And then of course over at how to podcasts, the how to record podcast count, excuse me, we will be putting up the audio version of the show into how to record podcasts and I’m going to be growing this a little bit more because I’ve kind of taken some time off of how to record podcast, because I’ve been doing a lot of stuff. It’s been very, very productive for everything that I’ve been doing so I’m bringing this back but I definitely want to bring somebody on to write for how to record podcasts. So text me if you are interested in that, of course, Geekazine at gmail. com Twitter being Geekazine think magazine put in a geek.
then you can find me there. So all right well if there’s any more questions or comments in the show notes which I do not see. I think we will call this an episode episode number two that is not to to Snake Eyes and and go from there. Thanks a lot for watching, Thanks a lot for listening. If you’ve listened.
We’re going to have this soon over on iTunes. We’re gonna have this soon over maybe on Spotify Google podcasts, you know, as we grow the show things will happen. And if you want to be part of the show, we have ways for you to bring your show you bring your stuff on you can record video you can record audio and you can send it to me, just email me and ask me how to do that.
